RESUMO Este trabalho teve os seguintes objetivos: identificar e quantificar os compostos constituintes dos óleos essenciais de Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt, Eucalyptus globulus Labill., Eucalyptus staigeriana F. Muell. ex F.M. Bailey, Foeniculum vulgare Mill., Ocimum basilicum L., Ocimum gratissimum L., e Piper hispidinervum C. DC., investigar suas toxicidades e repelências a S. zeamais e avaliar a toxicidade de P. hispidinervum a S. zeamais imaturos. Testes de indivíduos para cada óleo essencial foram conduzidos em delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado com cinco concentrações para cada óleo essencial e quarto repetições. A análise dos óleos por cromatografia gasosa e espectrometria de massa revelou a presença majoritária de Citronelal para C. winterianus; 1,8-Cineole para E. globulus; Limoneno para E. staigeriana; Limoneno para F. vulgare; Linalol para O. basilicum; (E)-Anethole para O. gratissimum e Safrole para P. hispidinervum. Nos testes de toxicidade por contato e ingestão, obteve-se uma CL50 variando de 5,12 a 78,89 µL 40g-1 de milho, em P. hispidinervum e C. winterianus, respectivamente. Nos testes de fumigação para adultos, as CL50 variaram de 2,1 a 19,4 µL L-1 de ar. Nos testes de fumigação de imaturos, o estágio de ovo foi suscetível ao óleo essencial, enquanto que as fases de larva e pupa mostraram-se tolerantes. Todos os óleos foram repelentes para S. zeamais.

ABSTRACT This study had the following objectives: to identify and quantify the constituent compounds of essential oils from Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt, Eucalyptus globulus Labill., Eucalyptus staigeriana F. Muell. ex F.M. Bailey, Foeniculum vulgare Mill., Ocimum basilicum L., Ocimum gratissimum L., and Piper hispidinervum C. DC., investigate their toxicity and repellency to S. zeamais and evaluate the toxicity of P. hispidinervum to immature S. zeamais. Individual tests for each essential oil were conducted with a completely randomized design with five concentrations for each oil and four replicates. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed the presence of citronellal in C. winterianus, 1,8-cineole in E. globulus, limonene in E. staigeriana, limonene in F. vulgare, linalool in O. basilicum, (E)-anethole in O. gratissimum, and safrole in P. hispidinervum. The median lethal concentration required to kill 50% of the insect (LC50) in contact and ingestion toxicity tests ranged from 5.12 to 78.89 μL 40g-1 corn in P. hispidinervum and C. winterianus, respectively. In adult fumigation tests, the LC50 ranged from 2.1 to 19.4 µL L-1 air, and in immature fumigation tests, the egg stage was susceptible to essential oil, whereas larval and pupal phases were tolerant. All of the oils repelled S. zeamais.

Este estudo avaliou os efeitos do extrato de frutos de Melia azedarach L. (Meliaceae) obtido através do solvente dióxido de carbono supercrítico sobre o desenvolvimento de Spodoptera frugiperda J.E. Smith, 1797 (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), desde o período larval até a fase adulta do inseto. Para obtenção do extrato, uma unidade de extração em escala laboratorial foi operada a 60 °C e 200 bar. O extrato, quando adicionado à dieta artificial das larvas, demonstrou ação inseticida, a CL50 calculada através da análise de Probit foi de 376,74 mg kg-1, na concentração de 5000 mg kg-1 e a mortalidade foi de 100%. Nas concentrações mais elevadas (500, 1000 e 5000 mg kg-1) o extrato apresentou também atividade inibitória de crescimento nos insetos, devido à ação antialimentar, resultando em larvas e pupas com massa e comprimento corporal significativamente menores que o controle. Na menor concentração testada (100 mg kg-1) foram observados efeitos bioativos a partir da fase adulta do inseto, como baixa viabilidade de pupas e adultos com deformações morfológicas, indicando, portanto, efeito de toxicidade crônica.

This study evaluates the effects of supercritical carbon dioxide extracts obtained from the fruit of Melia azedarach L. (Meliaceae) on the development of Spodoptera frugiperda J.E. Smith, 1797 (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), from the larval period until the insect adulthood. For this purpose, a laboratory-scale extraction unit was operated at 60 °C and 200 bar. Larval mortality increased by raising the extract concentration tested: the value of LC50 calculated by Probit analysis was 376.74 mg kg-1, and at a concentration of 5000 mg kg-1, the mortality was 100%. The extract exhibited insect growth inhibitory activity in the higher concentrations (500 mg kg-1, 1000 mg kg-1 and 5000 mg kg-1), due to antifeedant action, resulting in larvae and pupae with mass and body length significantly smaller than the control. At the lowest concentration tested (100 mg kg-1), bioactive effects from the adult stage of the insect were observed, with low viability pupal and adults presenting morphological deformities, hence indicating chronic toxicity effect.

The activity of Metarhizium anisopliae and Beauveria bassiana towards eggs and larvae of Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) was evaluated. Our data showed that the isolates were pathogenic to both developmental stages tested and the eggs were more susceptible than the 1st instars. The isolates URPE-6 and URPE-19 of M. anisopliae were more pathogenic to eggs and larvae, respectively. The compatibility of these two isolates with the insecticides chlorfenapyr, spinosad, indoxacarb, abamectin, and neem were evaluated. Spinosad and indoxacarb were compatible with the two M. anisopliae isolates in all tested concentrations. At the average recommended concentration, chlorfenapyr was compatible to URPE-6 and abamectin to UFPE-19. The use of entomopathogenic fungi associated with compatible insecticides may be a useful alternative to control T. absoluta.

The two spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch, is a nontarget herbivore of Bt-cotton, but acquires and accumulates higher levels of Cry toxin than that expressed by transgenic plants. This work investigated the development and reproduction of T. urticae and of the predator Phytoseiulus macropilis Banks, during three successive generations looking for potential nontarget effect. In addition, behavioral studies on feeding preference, oviposition, and predation were carried out on Bt and non-Bt cottons. The development and reproduction of T. urticae and P. macropilis was conducted using leaf discs of Bt and non-Bt cottons. Arena containing leaf discs from both cotton types connected by a slide coverslip were also used in the behavioral studies. Averages of the three generations showed that the Bt-cotton does not affect the development, survival of immature stages, and reproductive output of T. urticae and of the predator P. macropilis. Furthermore, the preference for feeding and oviposition of T. urticae and P. macropilis were similar on both cotton types. In addition, P. macropilis exhibited similar predatory behavior on T. urticae fed on both cotton types. Levels of Cry1Ac toxin in T. urticae was 3.97 times greater than that found in the Bt-cotton plants as determined using a ELISA test. Despite of the amount of toxin acquired by the prey (T. urticae), no detectable levels of Cry1Ac were found in the predatory mite P. macropilis.

Avaliou-se a eficiência de Metarhizium anisopliae e Beauveria bassiana para o controle do pulgão Lipaphis erysimi (Kalt.) em couve Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala D.C., bem como sua compatibilidade com óleo de nim (Neemseto®). Dez isolados desses fungos foram utilizados, onde o isolado CG 001 de B. bassiana e o isolado CG 30 de M. anisopliae apresentaram-se como os mais virulentos com 90% e 4,4 dias, e 64% e 3,8 dias, de mortalidade e tempo letal médio, respectivamente. Bioensaios com o produto à base de nim nas concentrações 0,5; 1,0 e 2,0% foram realizados por imersão foliar e pulverização sobre os pulgões. O tratamento com pulverização de 2,0% de Neemseto® proporcionou mortalidade de 90%. O teste in vitro de Neemseto® a 0,125; 0,25 e 0,5%, sobre os isolados CG 001 de B. bassiana e CG 30 de M. anisopliae mostrou que esses isolados podem ter seu crescimento colonial e viabilidade alterados quando expostos a concentrações de nim maiores que 0,25%. Em valores absolutos, os isolados CG 001 de B. bassiana e CG 30 de M. anisopliae foram os mais virulentos para L. erysimi, podendo ser utilizados no manejo dessa praga.

This work aimed to determine the efficiency of the entomopathogenic fungi Metarhizium anisopliae and Beauveria bassiana to control the aphid Lipaphis erysimi (Kalt.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) in kale Brassica oleracea var acephala D.C., as well as their compatibility with a neem oil formulation (Neemseto®). Ten isolates of both fungi were tested and the most pathogenic ones were B. bassiana CG001 and M. anisopliae CG30 with 90% and 4.4 days, and 64% and 3.8 days of mortality and median lethal time, respectively. Bioassays with neem at concentrations of 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0% were done either by leaf discs dipping or spraying the aphids on the leaf discs. The neem spraying treatment at 2.0% provided 90% mortality. The use of B. bassiana isolate CG001 or M. anisopliae isolate CG30 with neem at 0.125, 0.25, and 0.5%, demonstrated that these isolates could have their spore viability or colony growth affected when exposed to neem concentrations higher than 0.25%. In absolute values, the isolates B. bassiana CG001 and M. anisopliae CG30 are the most virulent to L. erysimi, and could be utilized in the management of this pest.

Pesquisas envolvendo plantas com atividade inseticida evoluíram bastante nas últimas décadas. Entre essas plantas destaca-se o nim, Azadirachta indica, que atua sobre várias espécies de insetos, principalmente Lepidoptera. Sua ação depende da espécie de inseto e concentração aplicada. Uma barreira contra potenciais agentes tóxicos ingeridos com o alimento é o canal alimentar. Assim, a pesquisa teve por objetivo descrever, histologicamente, o canal alimentar de lagartas de Spodoptera frugiperda (J E Smith) alimentadas com folhas tratadas com nim (Neemseto®), nas concentrações 0,5 e 1,0%, e com folhas não tratadas, nos intervalos de 48, 96, 144, 192 e 240h, quantificar as células regenerativas e analisar, histoquimicamente, o produto de secreção do mesêntero. As lagartas foram imobilizadas a baixa temperatura (-4ºC), o canal alimentar foi retirado, fixado em Boüin aquoso, incluído em paraplast e historesina, e os cortes corados por hematoxilina-eosina e ácido periódico de Schiff. Histologicamente, o canal alimentar de S. frugiperda mostrou-se semelhante ao de outros lepidópteros. Alterações morfológicas só foram evidenciadas no mesêntero, sendo a sua intensidade dependente do tempo e da concentração utilizada. Observou-se degeneração do epitélio e redução de células regenerativas e de atividade secretora dessa região, em ambas as concentrações de nim. Essas alterações foram observadas após 96h a 1,0% e 144h a 0,5%. Esses resultados demonstram que o nim (Neemseto®), nas concentrações estudadas, pode ser efetivo para o controle de S. frugiperda por promover alterações morfológicas no mesêntero.

Research involving plants with insecticide activity evolved significantly in the last decades. Among these plants, the neem tree, Azadirachta indica, is commonly used against several insects, mainly Lepidoptera. The neem efficiency depends on the target insect and on the concentration used. A barrier against potential toxic agents ingested together with the food is the alimentary canal. Thus, this research aimed to describe the histology of the alimentary canal of Spodoptera frugiperda (J E Smith) larvae fed on leaves treated with neem (Neemseto®) at a concentration of 0.5% and 1.0% and non treated, at different intervals (48, 96, 144, 192 and 240h), by quantifying the regenerative cells and analyzing the secretion of the mesenteron histochemically. Larvae were immobilized at low temperatures (-4ºC), the alimentary canal was removed, fixed in Boüin´s aqueous, embedded in paraplast and historesin, sectioned and stained with hematoxilin-eosin and periodic acid- Schiff. The histology of the alimentary canal of S. frugiperda was similar to other lepidopterans. Neem effects on morphology were seen only in the mesenteron, depending on the time and concentration used, such as: epithelium, reduction on regenerative cells and on the secretory activity in this region, confirmed by the histochemistry in both neem concentrations. These alterations were observed after 96h at 1.0%, and 144h at 0.5%. These results indicte that neem (Neemseto®), at the concentrations studied, may be effective to control S. frugiperda because it promotes meaningful morphological alterations in the mesenteron.

Aceria guerreronis Keifer é considerada uma das principais pragas do coqueiro no mundo. Dentre os Phytoseiidae relatados nessa cultura, Amblyseius largoensis (Muma) tem sido encontrado associado a A. guerreronis. Com o intuito de verificar se A. largoensis se alimenta de A. guerreronis, foi estudada a biologia desse predador com diferentes fontes de alimento, incluindo A. guerreronis. Foram avaliadas três dietas [Tetranychus urticae Koch + pólen de mamona (Ricinus communis L.) + mel a 10%, A. guerreronis + pólen + mel e A. guerreronis isoladamente], avaliando-se o desenvolvimento, sobrevivência, oviposição, razão sexual e longevidade de A. largoensis a 27ºC, 60 ± 5% de umidade relativa e fotofase de 12h. Tabelas de vida de fertilidade foram construídas. A duração da fase imatura foi menor na dieta constituída apenas por A. guerreronis, enquanto que a fecundidade foi maior nas dietas à base de presa + pólen + mel. Não houve diferença entre os valores de sobrevivência das formas imaturas submetidas a diferentes dietas alimentares. Os parâmetros da tabela de vida de fertilidade foram superiores quando a alimentação foi constituída por A. guerreronis ou T. urticae + pólen + mel, embora o predador tenha sido capaz de completar seu ciclo biológico e se reproduzir quando alimentado exclusivamente com A. guerreronis. Os resultados sugerem que A. largoensis seja um predador de A. guerreronis em condições naturais e que possa estar desempenhando algum papel no controle dessa praga.

Aceria guerreronis Keifer is considered one of the main pests of coconuts around the world. Amongst the Phytoseiidae recorded on this crop, Amblyseius largoensis (Muma) has been reported in association with A. guerreronis. In order to verify whether A. largoensis feeds on A. guerreronis, the biology of this predator was evaluated on different food sources, including A. guerreronis. Three types of diet were tested [Tetranychus urticae Koch + castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) pollen + honey at 10%, A. guerreronis + pollen + honey, and only A. guerreronis], determining its development, survivorship, oviposition, sex ratio and longevity at 27ºC, 60 ± 5% RH 12 h photophase. Fertility life tables were constructed. The duration of the immature phase was lower when feeding only on A. guerreronis, while fecundity was higher when feeding on a prey + pollen + honey. There was no difference in relation to survivorship of the immature stages between the three diets. Parameters of fertility life tables were higher when the diet included A. guerreronis or T. urticae + pollen + honey, although the predator was able to complete its life cycle and reproduce when feeding exclusively on A. guerreronis. The results suggest that A. largoensis preys upon A. guerreronis under natural condition and that it might play some role in the control of the latter.

A toxicidade de formulações comerciais de nim a Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) e a dois ácaros predadores, Euseius alatus De Leon e Phytoseiulus macropilis (Banks) foi estudada. A toxicidade tópica foi avaliada com três formulações comerciais (Natuneem, Neemseto e Callneem) e com o extrato de sementes de nim, todos na concentração de 1%, em comparação ao acaricida padrão, abamectina na concentração de 0,3ml/L e ao tratamento controle com água destilada. Com base no melhor efeito tópico sobre T. urticae, a formulação Neemseto foi selecionada para avaliar diferentes concentrações sobre ovos, e o efeito residual e repelente sobre adultos desses ácaros. O tratamento dos ovos consistiu na imersão em diluições de Neemseto por cinco segundos; e o efeito residual e repelente sobre adultos foi avaliado pela imersão de discos de folha nas diluições também por cinco segundos. A toxicidade de Neemseto a ovos e adultos foi maior para T. urticae comparada à toxicidade observada para os ácaros predadores. Neemseto foi repelente para T. urticae e E. alatus, quando testados nas concentrações 0,25; 0,50 e 1,00%, mas não afetou P. macropilis. A fecundidade de T. urticae foi reduzida significativamente por Neemseto em todas as concentrações, enquanto para os ácaros predadores, redução significante na fecundidade foi observada apenas nas maiores concentrações. Assim, nas formulações testadas, Neemseto foi o mais eficiente para o ácaro-rajado e provocou, relativamente, menor impacto aos ácaros predadores estudados.

The toxicity of selected commercial formulations of neem on Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) and two predatory mites Euseius alatus De Leon and Phytoseiulus macropilis (Banks) was studied. Topical toxicity was tested with the commercial formulations (Natuneem, Neemseto and Callneem) and extract of neem's seeds at concentration 1%, compared to the standard acaricide abamectin at concentration of 0.3 ml/L and the control treatment (distilled water). Based on the best performance against T. urticae through topical contact, the formulation Neemseto was selected to be evaluated using different concentrations against eggs, and residual and repellent effects on adults of the mites. Egg treatment consisted of dipping eggs into Neemseto dilutions and control treatment for five seconds. In addition, residual and repellent effects of Neemseto for adult mites consisted of using leaf discs dipped into the dilutions for five seconds. The toxicity of Neemseto on eggs and adults was greater for T. urticae compared to the toxicity observed for the predatory mites. Neemseto was repellent for T. urticae and E. alatus when tested at the concentrations of 0.25, 0.50 and 1.0%, and did not affect P. macropilis. Neemseto using all concentrations, while for the predatory mites significant reduction of mite fecundity was only observed at the largest concentrations reduced the fecundity of T. urticae significantly. So Neemseto, among tested neem formulations, performed better against the twospotted spider mite and exhibited relatively low impact against the predatory mites studied.

O ácaro Polyphagotarsonemus latus (Banks) constitui uma das principais pragas da videira no Submédio do Vale do São Francisco. Sendo assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar a biologia, determinar as exigências térmicas e a tabela de vida de fertilidade de P. latus em videira (Vitis vinifera L.) cv. Itália. Foram utilizadas câmaras climatizadas (BOD), ajustadas para as temperaturas de 18, 22, 25, 28 e 32°C, umidade relativa de 65 ± 10% e fotofase de 12h. O período ovo-adulto foi de 3,4 e de 6,8 dias para machos e de 3,5 e de 7,4 dias para fêmeas, respectivamente a 32 e 18ºC. Nas temperaturas de 18, 25 e 32ºC cada fêmea depositou, respectivamente, 16,5; 44,3 e 13,3 ovos. Os estágios de ovo, larva e pupa e o período ovo-adulto apresentaram, respectivamente, limiar térmico inferior de 11,23; 9,45; 12,19 e 9,71°C e constantes térmicas de 28,51; 14,59; 8,33 e 62,73 graus-dia. A duração média da geração (T) foi igual a 25,6; 10,8 e 8,2 dias, respectivamente, nas temperaturas de 18, 25 e 32°C. A taxa líquida de reprodução (R0) foi maior na temperatura de 25°C, correspondendo a um aumento de 30,12 vezes a cada geração. A taxa intrínseca de crescimento populacional (r m) foi de 0,10 (18°C); 0,31 (25°C) e 0,12 (32°C) e a razão finita de aumento populacional (lambda) 1,10 (18°C); 1,36 (25°C) e 1,13 (32°C). De acordo com as normais térmicas, P. latus pode desenvolver 95 e 99 gerações/ano, respectivamente, para os municípios de Petrolina, PE e Juazeiro, BA.

The mite Polyphagotarsonemus latus (Banks) constitutes one of the main pest of grape crop at the Submédio São Francisco Valley. The objective of this work was to study the biology of the broad mite Polyphagotarsonemus latus (Banks), to determine its thermal requirements and its fertility life table in grape (Vitis vinifera L.) cv. Italy. Acclimatized chambers (BOD) were used, adjusted to the temperatures of 18, 22, 25, 28 and 32°C, relative humidity of 65 ± 10% and alternated light of 12h. Egg-adult period was 3.4 and 6.8 days for males and 3.5 and 7.4 days for females, respectively at 32ºC and 18ºC. At the temperatures of 18, 25 and 32ºC, each female deposited, respectively, 16.5, 44.3 and 13.3 eggs. The stages of egg, larva and pupa and egg-adult period presented, respectively, thermal thresholds of 11.23, 9.45, 12.19, and 9.71°C and thermal constant of 28.51, 14.59, 8.33, and 62.73 degrees-day. The mean duration of one generation (T) was 25.6, 10.8 and 8.2 days, respectively, at the temperatures of 18, 25 and 32°C. The net reproductive rate (R0) at the temperature of 25°C was the highest, corresponding to an increase of 30.12 times at each generation. The intrinsic rate of population increase (r m) was 0.10 (18°C), 0.31 (25°C) and 0.12 (32°C) and the finite ratio of population increase (lambda) was 1.10 (18°C), 1.36 (25°C) and 1.13 (32°C). According to the mean temperature values, P. latus can have 95 and 99 generations/year, respectively, for the municipal districts of Petrolina, PE and Juazeiro, BA.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a acarofauna em grãos de feijão, milho e ração em supermercados e feiras livres da cidade do Recife, PE. Em cada estabelecimento foi coletada uma amostra de 500 g de cada grão e ração, em intervalos bimensais, no período de agosto/2002 a junho/2003. Cada amostra foi dividida em duas sub-amostras de 250 g. Uma delas foi submetida à extração de ácaros logo após a coleta e a outra foi incubada a 26ºC e umidade relativa de 78% por 30 dias. Ao final desse período a segunda sub-amostra foi processada da mesma forma que a primeira. Os ácaros foram montados em lâminas para microscopia em meio de Hoyer e identificados pelo menos até o nível de gênero. Foram coletados 11.956 ácaros pertencentes às famílias Acaridae, Ebertiidae, Glycyphagidae, Cheyletidae, Stigmaeidae, Pyemotidae, Tarsonemidae, Tydeidae, Cunaxidae, Ameroseiidae, Ascidae e Phytoseiidae. Dentre os ácaros primários, a espécie Suidasia medanensis Oudemans foi a predominante no levantamento (3.035 indivíduos), seguida de Caloglyphus hughesi (Samsinak) (436 indivíduos). Metapronematus sp. foi predominante (3.417 indivíduos), dentre os ácaros secundários, seguido de Tarsonemus granarius Lindquist (3.003). O número de ácaros coletados nas amostras incubadas foi sempre superior em relação às amostras não incubadas, assim como nas amostras de feira livre em relação às de supermercado.

The mite fauna was assessed in bean, maize and pet food in supermarkets and markets in Recife, PE, Brazil. A 500 g sample of each grain and food was collected in each establishment at two weekly intervals, from August 2002 to June 2003. The sample was divided into two 250 g sub-samples. One of them was submitted to spider mite evaluation shortly after collection and the other was incubated at 26ºC and 78% humidity for 30 days. At the end of this period the second sub-sample was processed in the same way as the first. The spider mites were mounted on slides for microscopy in Hoyer medium and identified at least at genus level. Eleven thousand nine hundred and fifty-six spider mites were collected belonging to the Acaridae, Ebertiidae, Glycyphagidae, Cheyletidae, Stigmaeidae, Pyemotidae, Tarsonemidae, Tydeidae, Cunaxidae, Ameroseiidae, Ascidae e Phytoseiidae families. Among the primary spider mites the Suidasia medanensis Oudemans species was predominant in the survey (3,035 individuals) followed by Caloglyphus hughesi (Samsinak) (436 individuals). Metapronematus sp. was predominant (3,417 individuals) among the secondary spider mites followed by Tarsonemus granarius Lindquist (3,003). The number of mites collected in the incubated samples was always greater compared to the non-incubated samples in both the market and supermarket samples.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o potencial de desenvolvimento e reprodução de Eutetranychus banksi (McGregor) em algumas espécies de fruteiras tropicais economicamente importantes. Os ácaros foram coletados em folhas de mamoeiro (Carica papaya L.), no campus da UFRPE e criados no laboratório, em arenas constituídas por discos de folha dessa fruteira. O experimento foi instalado com quatro tratamentos, representados pelos cultivares 011-BPA e 014-CPA de acerola (Malpighia emarginata A.DC.), mamão "Sunrise Solo" e laranja lima (Citrus sp.). Fêmeas adultas da criação foram confinadas durante 12h em arenas para oviposição. Avaliou-se a duração e a sobrevivência dos estágios imaturos em intervalos de 12h. Após a emergência, os adultos foram acasalados, sendo cada casal confinado em uma arena constituída por discos de folha. A longevidade e a fecundidade foram avaliadas a cada 24h. Com os resultados obtidos foi construída uma tabela de vida de fertilidade. O tempo de desenvolvimento de E. banksi foi menor no mamoeiro. Não houve diferença na longevidade de fêmeas nas diferentes fruteiras estudadas. A fecundidade de E. banksi foi maior no mamoeiro, diferindo das duas cultivares de acerola e laranja lima. A taxa líquida de reprodução, capacidade de aumento e razão finita de aumento foram maiores no mamoeiro. O menor tempo de desenvolvimento e maior fecundidade de E. banksi nessa fruteira podem ter ocorrido pelo fato de a população de ácaros ter sido coletada originalmente na mesma espécie vegetal.

The objective of this research was to determine the potential development and reproduction of Eutetranchus banski (McGregor) in some economically important species of tropical fruit tree. The mites were collected from papaya tree (Carica papaya L.), in the UFRPE Campus and reared in the laboratory, in arenas consisted of leaf discs of papaya tree. Four host species were tryied: cultivars 011-BPA and 014-CPA of Barbado's cherry (Malpighia emarginata A.DC.), papaya tree "Sunrise Solo" and orange lime (Citrus sp.). Adult females were confined during 12h in arenas for oviposition and the duration and survival of the immature stages were evaluated at 12h intervals. After the emergence, the adults were mated and each couple was confined in one leaf disc's arena. Longevity and fecundity were evaluated at each 24h. The results originated a fertility life table. The development time of E. banski was shorter in papaya tree. There was no difference in the females longevity in the different fruit trees studied. The fecundity of E. banski was higher in papaya tree, different from Barbado's cherry and lime orange. The net reproduction rates (Ro), the finite ratio of increase (l) and the increase capacity were higher in papaya tree. The lowest development period and higher fecundity of E. banski in papaya tree were possibly due to the fact that the mite population was originated from the same plant species.

Isolados dos fungos entomopatogênicos Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. e Metarhizium anisopliae (Metsch.) Sorok. foram testados sobre lagartas de Castnia licus (Drury), coletadas nos canaviais da Destilaria Tabu, em Caaporã-PB. Foram utilizados os isolados de código 645, 604, 512, 447, IPA 205, IPA 202, 610, IPA 198, IPA 214 e CG 001 de B. bassiana, bem como os isolados de código 1172, 866, PL 47, IPA 204, CG 423, UOD, 860, IPA 216, E9 e CG 100 de M. anisopliae, provenientes de diferentes hospedeiros e localidades. Na concentração de 10(8) conídios/ml, a percentagem de mortalidade provocada pelos isolados de B. bassiana variou de 53,3 a 83,3%, com Tempo Letal (TL50) compreendido entre 8,5 e 14,8 dias, sendo que o isolado 645 apresentou maior potencial para o controle de C. licus. Para os isolados de M. anisopliae, o percentual de lagartas mortas variou de 43,3 a 80%, com os valores de TL50 compreendidos entre 7,3 e 17,9 dias, sendo o isolado 1172 o mais virulento. As concentrações letais (CL50) para o isolado 645 de B. bassiana e 1172 de M. anisopliae foram de 1,17 x 10(7) conídios/ml e 2,34 x 10(7) conídios/ml, respectivamente, demonstrando que ambos isolados foram patogênicos para a fase larval de C. licus.

Isolates of the entomopathogenic fungi Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. and Metarhizium anisopliae (Metsch.) Sorok. were tested against Castnia licus (Drury) larvae, collected from Tabu Distillery sugar cane fields, in Caaporã-PB. The isolates code 645, 604, 512, 447, IPA 205, IPA 202, 610, IPA 198, IPA 214 and CG 001 of B. bassiana, as well as the isolates code 1172, 866, PL 47, IPA 204, CG 423, UOD, 860, IPA 216, E9 and CG 100 of M. anisopliae, originated from different hosts and localities, were tested. At the concentration of 10(8) conidia/ml, the percentage of mortality caused by isolates of B. bassiana ranged from 53.3% to 83.3%, with Lethal Time (LT50) ranging from 8.5 to 14.9 days. The isolate 645 presented the highest potential to control C. licus. For M. anisopliae isolates, the percentage of larval mortality ranged from 43.3 to 80%, with LT50 ranging from 7.3 to 18.0 days. The isolate 1172 was the most virulent. The lethal concentrations (LC50) for the isolates 645 of B. bassiana and 1172 of M. anisopliae, were 1,17 x 10(7) conidia/ml and 2,34 x 10(7) conidia/ml, respectively, thus showing that both isolates are pathogenic to larval phase of C. licus.

Avaliou-se o efeito de extratos aquosos de diferentes espécies de plantas no desenvolvimento de Plutella xylostella (L.). Discos de couve, Brassica oleracea var. acephala, 'Portuguesa' foram imersos em cada extrato e, após secos ao ar livre, foram inoculados com 12 larvas recém-eclodidas (<12h) de P. xylostella e então mantidos em placas de Petri. As avaliações foram realizadas, a cada dois dias, e os discos foliares foram substituídos por outros, submetidos aos mesmos tratamentos e procedimentos descritos acima. A duração da fase larval de P. xylostella foi alongada pelos extratos aquosos de Melia azedarach L. Cissampelos aff. glaberrima St. Hil. em 3,5 e 1,7 dias, respectivamente. Os extratos de Aspidosperma pyrifolium Mart., Azadirachta indica A. Juss. e a formulação de A. indica ocasionaram mortalidade total das larvas, o que não permitiu o cálculo da duração da fase larval. O restante dos extratos aquosos não afetou esse parâmetro. Para os extratos de M. azedarach, C. aff. glaberrima, Laurus nobillis L., Prosopis juliflora DC, Croton sp. e Eugenia uniflora L., a mortalidade das larvas foi de 96,7; 93,3; 83,3; 66,7; 63,3 e 60%, respectivamente. Os demais extratos não afetaram a viabilidade da fase larval de P. xylostella. A duração da fase pupal de P. xylostella não foi afetada pelos extratos, entretanto a viabilidade dessa fase foi afetada pelos extratos de M. azedarach, L. nobillis, C. aff.. glaberrima e Croton sp. com 100; 90; 66,7 e 65% de pupas das quais não emergiram adultos, respectivamente.

The effects of aqueous extracts of different plant species on the development of Plutella xylostella (L.) were studied. Leaf discs of kale cultivar Portuguesa, Brassica oleracea var. acephala, were dipped in each plant extract per 30 seconds. Twelve neonate P. xylostela larvae (<12h) were fed on treated leaf discs and kept in petri dishes. The leaf discs were replaced at two-day intervals by fresh leaf discs treated with the plant extracts. Larvae of P. xylostella which fed on leaf discs treated with Melia. azedarach L. and Cissampelos aff. glaberrima St. Hil. delayed their development by 3.5 and 1.7 days, respectively. However, the other plant extracts studied did not affect larva development. Extracts of Aspidosperma pyrifolium Mart., Azadirachta indica A. Juss., and A. indica oil formulation caused 100% mortality of P. xylostella larvae, while, the extracts of M. azedarach, C. aff.glaberrima, Laurus nobillis L., Prosopis juliflora DC, Croton sp. and Eugenia uniflora L. caused larval mortality of 96.7, 93.3, 83.3, 66.7, 63.3 and 60%, respectively. The other studied extracts did not cause significant larval mortality. Duration of pupae stage was not affected by the studied plant extracts, however, the extracts of M. azedarach, L. nobillis, C. aff. Glaberrima and Croton sp. caused 100, 90, 66.7 and 65% of pupae mortality, respectively.

Com o objetivo de identificar fontes de resistência à Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith, 1797), foram avaliadas as cultivares de milho CMS-22, CMS-35, AG-106, Dina-70, AG-510 e CMS-36 em campo, utilizando-se o delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso com quatro repetições. Utilizaram-se as variáveis: danos foliares, obtidos através da escala visual de notas, sobrevivência, peso e comprimento das lagartas, 10 dias após a infestação artificial das plantas com lagartas de 1º ínstar. As cultivares diferiram significativamente (P=0,05) apenas com relação aos danos, destacando-se AG-510 como a mais resistente, com dano médio de 5,41 em comparação com CMS-35 e AG-106, as mais suscetíveis, com danos médios de 8,38 e 7,85 respectivamente. Foram determinadas correlações lineares significativas (p=0,01) entre os danos e peso de lagartas, danos e comprimento de lagartas e peso e comprimento de lagartas, indicando a possibilidade de utilização dessas variáveis nos estudos de resistência de milho a S. frugiperda.

The objective of this work was to identify sources of resistance to Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) in six corn cultivars (CMS-22, CMS-35, AG-106, Dina-70, AG-510 and CMS-36) which were tested under field conditions using a complete randomized block design with four replications. The following parameters were observed: a) foliar damage, obtained through a visual note scale; b) larvae survival, weigth and length, measured 10 days after artificial plant infestation. There were significant statistical differences (P=0.05) among cultivars only in relation to foliar damage, being AG 510 the most resistant cultivar with an average damage of 5.41. The most susceptible cultivars were CMS 35 and AG 106 which had an average damage of 8.38 and 7.85 respectively. Significant linear correlations (P=0.01) were found between foliar damage and larvae weigth; foliar damage and larvae length; and larvae weigth and larvae length, indicating the possibility of utilization of these parameters to evaluate resistance of corn cultivars to S. frugiperda.

Estudou-se o efeito de diferentes níveis de NPK na infestação de Aculops lycopersici (Massee) (Acari: Eriophyidae) em tomateiro (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill), cultivar IPA 5, em condições de campo, na região do Submédio do Vale do São Francisco. Utilizou-se o delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados em arranjo fatorial, com quatro blocos e quatro níveis de N (0, 60, 120 e 180 kg/ha), três níveis de P (0, 80 e 160 kg/ha) e dois níveis de K (0 e 120 kg/ha). As formas ativas de A. lycopersici foram amostradas semanalmente, no período de 53 a 113 dias de idade das plantas, examinando-se 1,76 cm² da página inferior de 25 folíolos com maior infestação, coletados na parte mediana das plantas. Plantas adubadas com 120 kg/ha de K foram mais infestadas por A. lycopersici, em relação a plantas sem K. Determinou-se uma relação direta entre a infestação do ácaro e os níveis de P aplicados ao solo, no entanto, a infestação aumentou com a elevação dos níveis de P na presença de 120 kg/ha de K. A infestação foi maior nos níveis de 60 e 180 kg/ha de N e reduzida a 120 kg/ha, porém nos maiores níveis de N a interação NP exerceu pouco efeito sobre a infestação. Os níveis de N e P aplicados ao solo apresentaram correlação positiva com os teores encontrados nas folhas do tomateiro; em relação ao K não houve correlação.

The effect of different levels of NPK on the infestation of Aculops lycopersici (Massee) (Acari: Eriophyidae) on tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill), cultivar IPA 5, under field conditions was studied. The experimental design of randomized blocks with a factorial arrangement was used, including four blocks and utilizing four levels of N (0, 60, 120, and 180 kg/ha), three levels of P (0, 80, and 160 kg/ha), and two levels of K (0 and 120 kg/ha). The active forms of A. lycopersici were sampled weekly, 53 to 113 days after the tomato plants were sowed. Twenty five leaflets were collected from the intermediate part of the plants and an area of 1,76 cm² of the under side of these leaflets with bigger colonies was examined. The plants fertilized with 120 kg/ha of K were more infested by A. lycopersici. There was a direct relationship between mite infestation and the levels of P applied to the soil; At a K level of 120 kg/ha the infestation increased with P levels. At N levels of 60 and 180 kg/ha the infestation increased, whereas at 120 kg/ha it was reduced. However the NP interaction presented a low effect on the infestation at higher levels of N. The levels of N and P applied to the soil were positive and significantly correlated to the content found in the tomato leaves. No significat correlation was observed with regard to K.
